A "Walk Through" of a Person's First Skydive

Skydiving is the ideal way to experience an immense adrenaline rush, with many first time skydivers returning to do it again as soon as possible. It provides a rare chance to experience complete freedom as you free fall through the sky. It's as close as anyone could ever get to real flying. Most people who are interested in skydiving are hesitant, presuming that the activity is dangerous. However, The United States Parachuting Association has logged the jumps of more than 350,000 people who have completed more than 3 million skydives a year - there is a greater assumed risk associated when driving, especially when compared with skydiving.

Why is Tandem Skydiving Recommended?

There is an obvious safety aspect to it. To fly out on your own, you first need to go through a series of rigorous training programs that will call for many hours of groundwork. This doesn't include passing a written test and displaying an aptitude for skydiving. For people looking to skydive just for entertainment, a tandem skydive is ideal as it is less demanding. After a short training session, you will be harnessed to an experienced tandem instructor for an adventure of a lifetime.

Learning About Tandem Skydiving

During a tandem skydiving session also referred to as tandem parachuting, a certified instructor is securely strapped to your back and will guide you as you exit the aircraft and enter the exciting freefall moment up to the time you land. In a tandem skydive, 80% of the work is done by your instructors and gravity does the rest, giving you less obligation so that you take in the breathtaking views and savor your first skydiving experience. The United States Parachute Association requires individuals participating in skydiving to be a minimum of 18 years of age.

A tandem skydive experience enables you to free fall at 120mph in about a minute. It only calls for a brief ground lesson where your instructor will direct you on how to exit the aircraft, proper body placements, canopy control and good landing positions. You will also learn how you can deploy the actual parachute, even though it will not be necessary for you to do so during the actual skydiving session.

Experiencing a little bit of queasiness before and during the session is normal. Many first-timers get anxious, and those nerves show themselves as an upset stomach or a feeling of nausea. Individuals with average weights of around 200lbs have a greater risk of feeling sick but should not fret as this is just a temporary feeling. Despite this, the feeling of unease quickly disappears shortly after landing.

To have a safe and worry-free experience, you will be working with certain pieces of equipment in each of the jumps. Usually, a drogue is used instantly after exiting the airplane to stabilize terminal acceleration. This also decelerates the descent, lengthening the experience. Another important piece of skydiving equipment is the automatic activation device AAD) that detects whether you have opened the parachute properly and if not, it releases the reserve parachute hence saving lives.

Your Instructor's Qualification

A skydiving professional instructor needs to be a member of USPA and log a minimum of 500 jumps and 3 hours of freefall. Further, he or she will have at least three years of skydiving experience and must be familiar with skydiving equipment, drop zone layout, free falls, airplanes, canopy flights and landings.

Suggestions for New Skydivers

  • Since you will be putting in several hours in your drop zone, take the time to acquaint yourself with the place. This is a time to familiarize yourself with the landscape, and also ask any questions that you may have. Typically, you will be able to bring a light snack and it is encouraged that you consume it in the start of the tour, so you won't feel nauseous before and during the freefall.
  • For motion sickness prevention, you may want to take an over the counter medication to help you through the experience.
  • You will be given and suited with multiple pieces of safety equipment, including a jumpsuit and a helmet.

The Sensation of Skydiving

When you are finished with the briefing session, you will be harnessed to your instructor and get to enjoy a plane ride prior to diving out the plane with the help of your instructor. Usually, your instructor will have a countdown before propelling himself and you out of the aircraft. Many first-time customers are surprised by the gush of wind pushing against their face and body. Just make sure you take a breath through your mouth and stay comfortable knowing your protective gear is in place to ensure safety during the skydive experience.
